Gathered Leaves, Photographs by Alec Soth: poignant documentary photography at the Science Museum

Until 28th March 2016

Until 28th March 2016, the Science Museum is honouring the work of one of the greatest photographers of our era: Alec Soth.

Recently described by the media as the ‘greatest living photographer of America’s social and geographical landscape’, in the exhibition Gathered Leaves Alec Soth captures his native country, through intimate portraits and desolate landscapes. Alec Soth’s photographs find their inspiration in the tradition of Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Stephen Shore. Like these great names in photography, Alec Soth, who lives and works in Minnesota, shares the widespread American fascination with empty wilderness and the open road. Observing America, the artist reveals to his audience the image of an American society built on the ideals of independence, liberty, spirituality and individualism. His work is both unique and of the moment and encapsulates a profound sense of human experience: tenderness, joy, disappointment, fear and pride. All of these emotions are shared between the American artist and the visitor, in this major exhibition. For this, Alec Soth’s first ever exhibition in the UK, the Science Museum presents the four signature series of photos by the American photographer including his most recent work Songbook, warmly received by the critics.

Through the series Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), Niagara (2006) and Broken Manual (2010), Alec Soth reveals the work of a documentary photographer with a distinctive vision. Representing contemporary international art, this outstanding photographer experiments through his work with the different forms that photography can take, from exhibition to book, flyer and digital media. Gathered Leaves presents itself as a poignant photographic documentary, through which, with the help of Alec Soth’s unusual vision we can discover or rediscover the face of American society. With photo after photo, the exhibition at the Science Museum presents a disturbing journey filled with emotion and poetry.
