The district of République – Canal Saint-Martin is a working class locality with a bustling atmosphere located in the 10th and 11th arrondissements in Paris, a frequent venue for all sorts of events. The Canal Saint-Martin attracts an intellectual population, whilst the fashionable middle classes like to meet for a drink at the Point Ephémere or at the Comptoir Général. The Place de la République is known for its large statue of Marianne (symbol of the French Republic). The République neighbourhood is full of trendy cafes much frequented by Parisian youth. But the district is known in particular for its ‘arty’ tone, with so many creative and artistic people thronging its streets.
Also worth seeing: the Square Villemin, the largest green space in the 10th arrondissement; the Arsenal Port, edged by a park, rose garden, arbours and children’s play grounds; the Passage du Desir and the Rue du Paradis where there are old china and pottery shops.
