  • Châtelet – Les Halles, a permanently bustling district in the centre of Paris

The Châtelet – Les Halles district is located in the heart of Paris, near the Rue de Rivoli. It takes its name from the famous Place du Châtelet that was created in 1858 on the spot where the old fortress once stood, the Grand Châtelet that served as a prison under the Monarchy, and from Les Halles – the former wholesale food and produce market.

Brought to life by its many cafes and small squares, the Châtelet – Les Halles district also includes that iconic Parisian cultural institution, the Georges Pompidou Centre, still often called Beaubourg, and the neo-Renaissance style Hotel de Ville de Paris (Paris City Hall).

Also worth seeing: the Church of Saint Eustache where Moliere was baptised; the Medici Column that is the sole remains of Queen Catherine de Medici’s palace; the Palmier Fountain, a monumental fountain erected in 1808 to commemorate Napoleon’s victories, in the Place du Châtelet; the Theatre du Châtelet and the Theatre de la Ville, two Italianate theatres built by Gabriel Davioud, commissioned by Baron Haussmann; the Jardin des Halles, a small plaza on the spot where the former wholesale market stood; the Forum des Halles, an underground shopping centre.
