An iconic event during the French Revolution, the Storming of the Bastille that took place on 14th July 1789, has become the French National Day. Today the July Column on the Place de la Bastille commemorates the event and also serves as departure point for all major demonstrations in Paris. It overlooks the Arsenal Port that links the Saint-Martin Canal to the River Seine. This neighbourhood is also a favourite spot for second-hand markets and cultural events.
Also worth seeing: the Bastille Opera with its unique concert hall which regularly plays host to the world’s greatest opera and ballet companies; the Coulee Verte (Green Promenade) along an old railway line that has reverted to nature once more; the lively bars that make the Bastille district one of the most fashionable areas for Paris nightlife.
